The sole airport serving Western Pima County is set to undergo critical safety enhancements funded by federal dollars.

Pima County supervisors greenlit two grants from the Federal Aviation Administration during their Aug.

The funding will pay for vital safety upgrades at Eric Marcus Municipal Airport in Ajo, according to county officials.

The project will replace runway lighting systems to assist pilots during landings and update electrical infrastructure to meet current code requirements.

Michelle Montagnino, engineering division manager at the Pima County Department of Transportation, said the work addresses long-standing needs at the facility.

Eric Marcus Municipal Airport is the only public-use airport in far western Pima County.

The facility serves residents in Ajo, Why and Lukeville.

The FAA grants total more than $833,000, with Pima County and the Arizona Department of Transportation's Aeronautics Group each contributing a $37,260 match.
