Sun Tran’s August service changes introduce a new express route connecting Oro Valley and Marana to downtown Tucson, along with schedule adjustments and a new on-demand zone.
Starting Sunday, August 16, Sun Tran will implement its August service changes, including the introduction of a new express route that directly benefits Oro Valley and Marana commuters. The new Sun Express Route 124X – Northwest-Downtown Express will provide convenient service between Oro Valley, Marana, and Downtown Tucson, according to the agency’s August newsletter.
This new route is part of a broader set of updates that include routing changes, schedule adjustments, and a new on-demand zone on Tucson’s east side. Riders are encouraged to review the changes and plan trips in advance.
What’s Changing for Oro Valley and Marana
The most significant change for northern Pima County residents is the debut of Route 124X. While the newsletter does not specify exact stops or frequency, it states the route will provide “convenient service between Oro Valley, Marana and Downtown Tucson.” This is the first direct express link from these communities to the city center, potentially reducing commute times and offering an alternative to driving.
In addition, several other Sun Express routes are being consolidated. Routes 102X and 103X will merge into a single route, with service along Speedway Boulevard discontinued. Riders who used to travel to Speedway and Campbell Avenue can use the merged route. These changes may affect commuters who connect from Oro Valley via park-and-ride or other express services.
Broader Service Adjustments
Beyond the new express route, Sun Tran is making several other changes on August 16:
- Route 11 will now serve Udall Transit Station, replacing service to South Kolb Road.
- Route 12 will merge with Route 108X, extending to Houghton Road and increasing frequency to every 15 minutes.
- Route 18 will be extended to Pima Community College East, replacing service to Udall Transit Station.
- Routes 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 15, 16, 19, 34, 37, 61, and 62 will receive schedule adjustments.
- At Ronstadt Transit Center, boarding for some routes will relocate to Sixth Avenue; wayfinding maps will be posted.
- Sun Shuttle routes 401, 412, 413, 421X, 430, and 450 will also see schedule changes.
These changes are designed to improve efficiency and connectivity across the region, but riders should check updated maps and schedules at Suntran.com before traveling.
New Sun On Demand Zone on East Side
In a separate initiative, Sun On Demand is launching its largest service zone yet on Tucson’s east side, covering the area from Tanque Verde Road to Golf Links Road and Wilmot Road to Houghton Road. This free, curb-to-curb service operates Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sundays/holidays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Riders can book trips via the Sun On Demand app or by calling Sun Van Reservations at (520) 792-9222.
While this zone is not in Oro Valley, it reflects Sun Tran’s broader expansion of on-demand services, which may eventually extend to other areas.
