The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will permanently close the Interstate 10 interchange at Palo Verde Road at 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, as part of the ongoing project to reconstruct and widen I-10 from Kino Parkway to Alvernon Way. The closure is necessary for crews to demolish the existing bridges at Palo Verde and Irvington roads and rebuild the highway.
The $600 million project, which began in June 2025, is the largest highway construction project in Southern Arizona history. It aims to reduce delays and enhance safety by adding a third lane in each direction of I-10 and building two interchanges. The project is expected to continue through 2028.
Key project features
- Widen I-10 to three lanes in each direction between Kino Parkway and Alvernon Way, with auxiliary lanes.

What the closure means for drivers
The Palo Verde interchange closure will allow crews to further reconstruct the highway after demolishing the existing bridges and travel lanes. Just west of Palo Verde, ADOT will open a new interchange at Country Club Road this fall, with much of the paving for the new roadway and ramps already complete. Drivers who currently use Palo Verde to access I-10 will need to use alternate routes, such as Kino Parkway or Alvernon Way, until the Country Club interchange opens.
Background and context
The project is the first to result from a study completed in 2020 that recommended improvements along a roughly 10-mile stretch of I-10 from I-19 to Kolb Road. The study also identified an alignment for an extension of State Route 210 (Barraza Aviation Parkway) along Alvernon Way that will connect I-10 to downtown Tucson.
ADOT has not yet announced specific detour routes for the Palo Verde closure, but drivers should expect increased traffic on adjacent streets. The agency has committed to maintaining access to businesses in the area.
