Student groups push for UA to become sanctuary campus in Tucson.

Several student and community groups are asking the University of Arizona to become a sanctuary campus to protect students and workers from federal immigration enforcement.

According to campus organizations, activists have presented university leaders with a list of demands to increase protections before a fast-approaching deadline.

The coalition, which includes the group UA Resist, wants the university to limit Immigration and Customs Enforcement access to the campus, protect student information and provide legal assistance for students and workers targeted by immigration enforcement.

Additionally, the groups are calling on university leadership to address campus surveillance, and end specific research and collaborations that involve federal immigration agencies.

The organizations have given University of Arizona leaders until Friday, Oct. 23, to respond to their demands.

University of Arizona officials have not yet commented on the demands.

Representatives for the university did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
